Cockroaches

It only takes one roach sighting to ruin an event. It doesn’t matter how clean your kitchen is, one cockroach can end the dinner, party or first date. The sighting of a roach in a restaurant could ruin a Yelp rating!

And that’s a little overboard, right?

Regardless of cleanliness, roaches are some of the most common pests found in homes. It’s likely there’s one hiding in every kitchen, everywhere.

Yet they still cause an uproar.

Roaches are the one “pest” we can all agree upon as being the most gross, vigilant and equalizing of all pests.

Roaches have an extreme ability to reproduce. They also emit a terrible smell! Cockroaches can cause problems in the form of diseases like E. Coli, Shigella, and Salmonella.

Seeing a roach SHOULD make you want to call a pest professional. There are many factors to consider when attempting to control roaches.

  •  What is the species of roach?
  • What are the conditions causing roaches?
  • What treatment should you apply?

Should you DIY this?

DIY treatments can drive roaches to hide deeper.  A pest professional knows the best course of treatment and is educated on the varieties of roaches.

Things you can do

To prevent an infestation of roaches, the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” rings true!

  • Eliminate food sources.
  • Remove unwanted food from kitchen cabinets and your sink.
  • Empty the garbage regularly.
  • Seal food items in airtight containers.
  • Put away dog food.
  • Clear out clutter.
  • Clean your surfaces.
  • Clean out your drains.
  • Seal off cracks and entrances.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are a part of our Southern structure. They are the one “pest” we can all agree upon as being the grossest, most vigilant and equalizing of all. It seems that no matter who you are, where you live, or how clean your kitchen is…one roach will send the whole household up onto the couch.

Growing up in Mississippi, it’s not unusual to have stories of cockroaches in some shape or form. In my creative household, they even invaded our nightmares. For years, my little sister had a recurring dream about a “peach colored flying roach”. Around small towns, everyone knows who “has roaches” and that’s not a kept secret. Everyone agrees, cockroaches are just the worst. This episode of “Infested” on Animal Planet is dedicated to a roach infestation.

Whether focusing on their extreme ability to reproduce or the terrible smell they emit, there is nothing good about cockroaches. This quote from an article in the BBC about the smells of cockroaches stirred up memories of cleaning out an old college apartment for me.

“The reason why smashed cockroaches smell like a clogged truck stop toilet that’s been fermenting in 90-degree heat is because they store nitrogenous waste – uric acid, specifically – in their fat for recycling.”

So what are you going to do about cockroaches?

Seeing a cockroach SHOULD make you want to call the exterminator. Species of roach, conducive conditions, what to apply, and many other factors can make roach control frustrating. Can cockroaches survive a nuclear attack?

Why did I google this anyway?

The topic of this blog was meant to be “Can cockroaches survive a nuclear attack?”. It didn’t take long to find out the answer to that is no, according to this article and many others. You could probably guess that this topic has been studied by everyone from scientists to extreme game show participants and many in between.

Well that was easy.

After discovering so quickly that roaches would not survive a nuclear blast, I felt the need to press on. Have you ever seen something so gross and disgusting that you felt like you needed to take a bath just from seeing it? That’s how I felt after researching cockroaches this week. There were just so many grossly compelling questions following the old nuclear attack one, I had to google on.

Google regret.

What is one thing you have ever googled and then regretted? For me, it was what happens if you step on a cockroach. For the record, baby roaches don’t go running, and that’s a relief. But unfortunately, I continued reading. When you step on or “squish” a cockroach, it’s eggs are not released. That’s because it’s eggs are stored in a hard shell, all around your house! Did I mention they multiply quickly?

Oh, it gets worse.

More google regret came when I clicked on “what happens if you put a cockroach in the microwave?”. First of all, I think we should ask why anyone would put a roach in a microwave. I digress. Cockroaches are cold blooded and can live without food for a week. They also have very little body water, so they can survive a long amount of time in a microwave oven. That’s also why they can only survive one week without water. You can read more about this here if you need further motivation to take a shower.

It’s not over.

“How to prevent cockroaches” has suddenly moved up in my search.  A few things you can do at home include getting rid of dirty dishes in the sink, garbage, pet food on the floor and leftover food sitting out. Of course, after reading way too many articles about cockroaches this week,  even I know that the cleanest house on Earth is still susceptible to roaches. You can clean, remove excess moisture from your home, seal up cracks. Haul off your newspapers and cardboard, mop frequently, declutter, wash dishes…are you tired yet? This is going to take teamwork.

Cockroach Control

It’s Not All About Insecticides

The thought of a cockroach crawling through your home probably sends shivers down your spine.  You have good reason to dislike cockroaches-they have been known to transfer disease pathogens such as bacteria.  They can even aggravate people that suffer with asthma because of their frequent shedding of their exoskeleton.

Cockroaches rapidly reproduce, with each of their egg capsules containing up to 48 eggs. Cockroaches are primarily nocturnal, so they prefer darkness.  Venturing out of hiding is dangerous for a cockroach, so they often feed within a few feet of where they live.

All of that said, if you see a few cockroaches in your home, you likely have many more hiding under the stove or in wall voids.  Many would think that spraying, and lots of it is the best answer if you have a roach infestation.  Applying a liquid insecticide can be important, but by no means is that the first step in roach control.

Why call a pest professional?

Seeing a cockroach should make you want to call the exterminator.  The correct treatment makes all the difference with cockroaches.  For example, DIY treatments can drive roaches to hide deeper rather than come out and contact the insecticide you have sprayed.  A professional knows the best course of treatment and is educated on the varieties of roaches.  Baits usually provide better control of roaches, but effectiveness of baits depends on the specific roaches you are dealing with.

Cockroaches often thrive in moist environments and are sometimes referred to as water bugs.  However, other conditions can encourage a roach infestation, so don’t focus on moisture alone.  Species of roach, conducive conditions, what to apply, and many other factors can make roach control a frustrating DIY project.  Rely on our trained, professional technicians to provide relief from roaches, ants, spiders and more.  Our Pest 360 program is our most popular solution to your pest control needs.  Whether you need pest services in Oxford, Tupelo, Pontotoc or Hernando, contact us today for an estimate.
