Lady bugs, lady beetles and stink bugs

Lady bugs (lady beetles) and stink bugs fall into the category of “occasional invaders” meaning they aren’t really bothersome until they infest your home. Seeing a few of these around your home isn’t a big deal until it becomes an infestation. But first…

What’s the difference between a lady bug and a lady beetle?

Lady Beetles

Around North Mississippi and Tennessee, we are likely seeing Asian Lady Beetles. These Lady beetles are slightly different from what most of us refer to as “ladybugs”.

Asian Lady Beetles often appear when the weather cools. They congregate on the side of a house by the hundreds or thousands. If Lady beetles can find an entry point into your home, they will make their way inside.

Lady Bugs

Lady bugs are generally considered to be helpful insects. When ladybugs or lady beetles are found on a crape myrtle, they typically have laid hundreds of eggs right in middle of the aphids. As soon as the eggs hatch, they begin feasting on the aphids. Ladybugs can rescue a crape myrtle and even a crop from aphids when the timing is right! However…

In order to protect themselves from predators, ladybugs secrete a fluid from the joints in their legs. This secretion is unappealing to predators and smells really bad to humans.

In an infestation of lady bugs, many homeowners experience staining on walls from the secreted fluid. Some people are even allergic to the dust from their crumbling shells.

Stink Bugs

While stink bugs have never depicted as “cute” like lady bugs, they are also not much of a problem until an infestation occurs. Much like the lady beetles, they produce a foul odor and are best swept up and safely thrown away.

What defines a pest infestation?

A sudden increase in destructiveness or population numbers of a pest species in a given area.

When their numbers and impact are currently or potentially at intolerable levels.

Avoiding infestation:

Now is the time to check out what is happening outside your home.

Repair cracks around windows and doors

Repair torn window or door screens

Remove piles of branches and leaves in your lawn

Eliminate areas where water collects

Inside your home:

Check under sinks for leaking pipes and repair

If you discover a building infestation, vacuum up lady bugs, lady beetles and stink bugs and throw them away. If you are beyond that solution,  Lawn and Pest can help.

In addition to “occasional invaders” we are also here to protect your home from termites, roaches, ants and more. Our licensed pest technicians will thoroughly spray inside and outside of your home on a regular schedule to ensure this problem is taken care of now and later.

Local pest control

Shopping local doesn’t just mean buying from boutiques downtown, you can also choose “local pest control” when facing pest issues. If searching online, you one “Google local pest control” away from many options.

Thanks to big budgets, targeted marketing and branding,  national pest companies have successfully made their names a fixture.

Google Us

When deciding between a local or a national pest company, try reading the Google reviews. You can’t help but notice that our customers frequently refer to our employees by name in the reviews.

National pest control companies aren’t bad. They are large and successful pest control companies. We easily recognize their names and logos and feel like we “know” them. But do they know us?

Does local matter when it comes to pests?

Yes, and here’s why:

  • A local pest control company may be able to charge you less for the same services.
  • We live here, too. A local company will be well aware of all the seasonal pest infestations that are happening where YOU are, not where THEY are.
  • A local pest control company can work with your schedules and needs, not what “corporate” tells them to do.

We are a locally owned pest control business.

Working with Lawn and Pest Solutions means that you are getting very personal service. We work hard to retain our employees for years so that customer relationships are solid and built on trust.

Our pest technicians are trustworthy, honest, hardworking and loyal. We don’t send in “fly by night” employees to spray inside your home. You will recognize our uniformed guys (driving well marked trucks) as they spray your lawn or patio.

In addition to providing reliable technicians, our owner Paul Welborn feels personally responsible for each customer. It is not uncommon for him to show up at a home to help solve an unusual pest issue. He is committed to making sure the customer gets the best possible service.

We at Lawn and Pest Solutions company see ourselves as a team. With this line of thinking,  everyone benefits, including the customers. This is why it is important to choose a local pest control company over a national one.

We provide outstanding customer service and stand behind our programs. We serve the North Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee areas with outstanding pest control. Contact our office 24/7 to “shop local” today.

Bug proofing your home

The best way to bug proof your home is by keeping bugs from ever entering your home. A tidy home and yard also help keep bugs away. A consistent program like our Lawn and Pest Solutions Pest360 can “seal the deal” as they say.

From the outside in

A bug proof home happens as the result of a team effort. The best professional treatment won’t work if we aren’t “all in this together”. Let’s start in the yard.

  • If you have firewood stacked next to your home, get it off the ground and move it a few feet away from the house.
  • Clean up debris from your yard. Piles of sticks, limbs and leaves are gathering places for bugs and other pests.
  • If there are any limbs, vines or branches touching your home, remove them. These create a corridor for bugs and other undesirable critters to get into your roof or home.
  • Repair any small holes, cracks or tears in window screens, under doors or windows. Bugs are tiny and can get in the smallest access points.

Inside the house

  • This may seem super obvious, but shut your windows and doors, all the way. Gaping doors and unscreened windows left open will allow ANYTHING to get in your home.
  • Check the space behind your washing machine and refrigerator where water lines come in. This is not as obvious or easy to check, but a very easy point for bugs to get in your home.
  • Vacuum away cobwebs.
  • Run your garbage disposal frequently.

What are bugs looking for inside my home?

Water is their number one priority.

Leaky faucets or sources of water are popular gathering spots for bugs. Look under your sink, washing machine, and refrigerator. Any place where water runs from outside to inside is a hot spot.

Food is their second priority.

  • Rinse and put away dirty dishes in the sink.
  • Sweep up pet food that scatters on the floor.
  • Keep pet food in sealed containers.
  • Contact Lawn and Pest Solutions in New Albany, MS and as a team, we will work to bug-proof your home. Hire our local bed bug exterminators to protect your home from unwanted guests. Our licensed pest technicians will show up promptly and treat your house the same they would their own. We serve neighborhoods and businesses from Memphis, Tennessee and all over North Mississippi.

Wasp control

Wasp control is something almost everyone has encountered. While a wasp doesn’t usually go out of its’ way to sting, if you disrupt their space, they may get a little “stirred up”.

Unless one is highly allergic to a wasp sting, they aren’t very harmful (but maybe painful). Those who ARE highly allergic to wasps can be in great danger from just one sting.

Just be calm.

If you happen to wander into a wasp nest, don’t start swatting! Swatting attracts more wasps, so calmly move away. Walk indoors if you can. If a wasp follows you indoors, open windows and doors and allow it some room to get out.

Where to find wasps

Wasp nests are generally found around loose piles of wood and under porches. They can also be found along rafters or in rarely used empty cans, buckets and boxes.

What’s good about wasps?

The best redeeming quality of a wasp is that it helps us out by eating other insects. Spotting the difference between wasps and bees is pretty easy. Bees are “husky” and wasps are “slim”. Bees are “hairy” and wasps are “smooth”.

What attracts wasps?

  • Flowers and plant life
  • Outdoor eating areas
  • Uncovered and overflowing garbage cans
  • Properties with many insects and spiders (prey for wasps)

When to control wasps?

Wasp nests are generally designed by the queen in the spring and they grow all spring and early summer. By August, nests are at their peak size and the wasps are at their most aggressive. If you have waited until now, get wasp control with the help of a professional or just try to avoid stirring them up.

If you decide to just keep calm, let the frost do its’ work.  Then get rid of the nests so they don’t move back in next spring.  Be proactive and start looking for them early in the year. When you find them, destroy the nests and the queen before they grow and get really angry.

Wasp prevention:

  • Remove abandoned nests in winter
  • Seal gaps in your home
  • Eliminate loose piles of wood and refuse in your yard
  • Clean up rotten fruit under fruit trees
  • Keep outdoor garbage tightly sealed

If you aren’t into wasp control, call a professional pest service like Lawn and Pest Solutions. They can control wasps while you stay safely indoors. Our techs can assess the situation and handle it promptly and safely. We serve the Memphis, Tennessee and North Mississippi areas. Give us a call to control wasps, hornets, bees and other angry pests!

Are Bed Bugs back?

As children, we may have envisioned bed bugs a little differently than we do today. The phrase “Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite”  has a whole new meaning!

How did that happen?

Back with a vengeance, and this new generation of bed bugs is stronger and more resilient than ever. We once thought that they had been eradicated, however, the treatment was found to be extremely dangerous to humans.

We are now more aware of health and safety issues with harmful chemicals. What once wiped out infestations of roaches and bed bugs turned out to also cause cancer. We are now strictly monitored on the usage of chemicals and thankfully so.

Where do they come from?

First of all…bed bugs have nothing to do with cleanliness.

Some call them “hitchhikers” because they ride home on the bottoms of your shoes, your luggage, purses, and backpacks.

Watch where you sit, as they usually hide out on soft or upholstered surfaces like beds, sofas, carpets.

Unfortunately, they can travel from room to room in apartment buildings, five star hotels, and dormitories.

What do they want?

All bed bugs are looking for is a good meal and a place to hide, they don’t need trash or filth, just your blood. These pests like a good “blood meal”. After engorging themselves on your blood (while you sleep), they scurry away to hide in the seams of a mattress, under the baseboards, sometimes behind the paintings on the walls.

Signs of bed bugs

How do I find bed bugs?

  • Tiny blood stains that look like rust on your sheets or pillowcases
  • Dark/rusty spots of bedbug excrement on bedding, mattresses and walls
  • Fecal spots, eggs shells or shed skins in hiding places
  • A musty odor

What can I do to get rid of bed bugs?

The treatment is no longer harmful to humans, but it takes a team effort and multiple treatments to rid a home or business of bed bugs.

If you think you have bed bugs, call professionals ASAP. There are plenty of DIY applications you can attempt, but are you comfortable with baking soda to get rid of a pest that eats a “blood meal” and hides in your bed?

Our company offers the best bed bug treatment! Contact us at Lawn and Pest Solutions and we will inspect your home and treat it very thoroughly if needed. We will return in 7-14 days and treat it again (because eggs will have hatched by then). You will have some work to do as well. Our technicians will leave you with a checklist of things to do, like washing and drying all linens with high heat.

Getting rid of bed bugs is not fun, it’s not easy, but it can be done. Our licensed pest technicians are making their way all over the Memphis, Tennessee area and North Mississippi including Oxford, Tupelo, and New Albany. Let us help you fight the war against pests.

Roaches

No matter who you are or how clean your kitchen is, one roach can ruin the movie, dinner or party. Let’s not even venture into the sighting of a roach at a restaurant.

Roaches are some of the most common pests found in homes. They can cause problems in the form of diseases like E. Coli, Shigella, and Salmonella. They are the one “pest” we can all agree upon as being the most gross, most vigilant and most equalizing of all pests.

Seeing a roach SHOULD make you want to call a pest professional. There are many factors that make controlling roaches frustrating, like:

What is the species of roach?

What are the conditions causing roaches?

What treatment should you apply?

Before you DIY this problem…

Be aware that DIY treatments can drive roaches to hide deeper.  A pest professional knows the best course of treatment and is educated on the varieties of roaches.

Roaches have an extreme ability to reproduce. They also emit a terrible smell, which is what this familiar sound bite references. So what are you going to do about cockroaches?

Help US help YOU.

There are things you can do to help prevent an infestation of roaches. The old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” rings true!

Eliminate food sources.

Remove unwanted food from kitchen cabinets and your sink.

Empty the garbage regularly.

Seal food items in airtight containers.

Put away dog food.

Clear out clutter.

Clean your surfaces.

Clean out your drains.

Seal off cracks and entrances.

And then call us.

You can rely on our licensed pest professionals to launch a personal attack on the roaches in your home or business. We have the tools and insecticides that are targeted to the specific type of roaches for your area.

You can also reach out to us at 662-534-4535, 901-560-2399, or fill out our online contact form to know more about our local bed bug exterminators.

Hiring a Pest Professional

How do you know when you need to hire a pest professional? Is it the first time you walk the pesticide aisle of a home improvement store?

The big bags of chemicals and small containers of mysterious liquids are intimidating. The fine print on the bags and bottles along with the smells of their contents are a lot to process.

You may say to yourself “I don’t know what I am doing here”. Maybe it is time for you to consider the benefits of hiring a pest professional!

You may ask yourself…

Is this the right formula?

Is this safe for my pet?

What will happen if my children touch/eat this? Where do I spray?

Do I spray it once a week? Month? Year?

What is in this stuff?

And for this writer… Where did we put the sprayer, and how do I get this smelly stuff inside of it?

With all of that in mind, a DIY insecticide program should bring up a lot of uncertainties.

Hiring a pest professional sounds like a good idea.
